About this Beach

The Għadira Nature Reserve at the back of the beach was established in 1980 and is one of the most important wetland habitats in the central Mediterranean for migratory birds, a fact most people splashing in the shallows are blissfully unaware of. Malta's largest sandy beach, with six monitoring points spread across its full length and full Blue Flag facilities.

Getting there
By car

On the main road between Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa — impossible to miss.

By bus

Buses 41, 42, 221, 222 stop directly at the beach.

Calm conditions — safe for swimming. Suitable for all swimmers including children.

Yellow Flag

Medium hazard — some swell or current. Weaker swimmers and children should exercise caution or stay in shallow water.

Purple Flag

Jellyfish or other marine pests detected. Swimming is at your own risk — consider wearing a rash vest. Seek first aid if stung.

Red Flag

High hazard — dangerous conditions such as strong swell, currents, or severe weather. Do not enter the water.

Double Red Flag

Beach closed for swimming. Conditions are extremely dangerous — lifeguards will not enter the water. Do not swim under any circumstances.
